A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
